But before I play the blame game with the beach gang, I want to say that if you have bought a digital scan from me that I later revise (like the Easter egg girl above or the samples I posted yesterday) and you like the revised version more -- just email me and I will send you the new and improved version.
So why am I upset with the beach gang? Well, truth be told, I love 'em! Each and every one of them. And they are quite a cast of characters to be sure! The guy in the sunglasses on the very back row wearing a beret -- that's Le French Boyfriend. The woman in the last row, the one who all you can see is the outline of her hair behind the boy in suspenders -- She's Mrs. Invisible. The woman in profile refused to look at the cameraman because she's mad at him because he's her husband and he wouldn't do anything about the young woman on the front row who's sitting with her legs crossed -- what's she thinking posing like that, her dress up above her knees?! The child at the far left just wants the whole thing to be over so she/he can go pee-pee. The woman wearing the big dotted dress -- that's Gladys who loves to be different and she's miffed at Agnus in the front row, who is stealing the scene standing out in her stripes ....
Here's a golden version to mimic golden sandy beaches....

"No," I replied smirking. "I just work at home in my pajamas."
Anyway....that's when I decided that I would show you my beloved beach gang and see if anyone knows how to balance the light/dark and make the image "pop." I've tried control/alt/2 to create a layer fill in; I've tried shadow/highlights.....The image is adorable but I want it to be perfect. Anyone who has the perfect solution -- you'll have my deepest appreciation!

Have you tried "color curves"? It's under "enhance" and is a color option on Photoshop. I know you're working with black and white and sepia and white, but it may just work...
I don't know anything about photoshop, sorry. I just wanted to say that I think you have done an absolutely fabulous job on this photo! Fantastic!
hey! here is my "kissed again" link using the very image in your post today! xoxo http://artfromthewell.blogspot.com/2012/03/kisssed-again-on-pink-saturday.html
i love what you have done to this!
i think it looks great...what i like is that no one person stands out..i like looking and noticing the differences in them. i think it "pops" just as it is.
i wish i could tell you what you'd like to know..but i have no idea!i'm no PS pro..some of the things i've done that i like the best,i have no idea how i did it!
heck..i just found the different brushes in it about a month ago!..didn't know i had them!!
i really do think this photo is perfect as it is!
I don't know about Photoshop either. i can see why you love the image but it does have that big white strip of sky. My dad sometimes used to superimpose a more interesting sky on a negative with a featureless white sky when he was doing his own black and white photo printing. A blue sky with sunny clouds (in B/W of course).
Something that would improve the composition would be to cut it into 2 fab pictures, one group, mainly facing left, up to the little boy with the bow tie, and the other group facing front. More work, I know, to tidy up but it could work?
I would try to reduce saturation and then use curves to adjust color. Also if it were my image I would
crop out the bottom and then enlarge it. It's a wonderful photo I can see why you want it to be perfect!
Trishia,
Merci! I absolutely LOVE all these images and am busy planning what to make for the April Love Me Two competition. Thank you for your creativity, largesse and humor. I love the authentic backgrounds on the postcards and like it when they are cleaned up, not doctored up. It's all looking tres belle.
